Most professional pilots spend at least two weeks a month on the road, living in hotel rooms or crash pads. As a result, during the course of their careers, pilots learn important survival techniques especially in the area of finding and preparing food on the road. These skills are extremely important when a pilot arrives at a hotel room late at night and the restaurants are all closed or too far away. These skills are also very important overseas in those situation when fisheye soup and chicken entrails with rice does not sound appealing. (Saving money has nothing to do with it!) So, straight out of the “Lonely Pilot on the Road Cookbook” comes this delightfully effective technique for cooking a nice hot dinner when a kitchen is not available. (If you have ever wondered how that brown scum on the hotel iron’s face got there, this might give you some insight!)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1.) PLACE an inverted hotel IRON in a three ring or Jepesen’s binder as shown in the picture. (The iron should not be on or plugged in during this operation!)
2.) PREHEAT the iron on HIGH (no steam) for 5 minutes. Hamburgers, steaks and a small PIZZA can be placed directly on the iron’s face.
3.) If you would like to steam vegetables, you must obtain a suitable container, add water and use the manual sprayer. Most vegetables take less than 10 minutes to steam. (Read the package instructions for further guidance.)
4.) For CUBAN SANDWICHES obtain another iron placed on top of the sandwich for steaming and pressing.
5.) If you are entertaining guests, you can often use the room’s ironing board as either a serving table, or in a pinch, the dining table. If you use the ironing board as a dining table ensure you use the cleanest towel available as the tablecloth.
